The Digital Divide lives
I have a world of experience that is hard to match in Washington.
From years of experience as a reporter and editor, to public
relations work in the government, consulting firms and private
sector, I have seen all sides of the media and public policy worlds.

My experience is in two parts:  Journalism and Public Relations.

As a journalist,  I was a reporter for many years, starting with local
newspapers in Maryland, Virginia and Massachusetts before
coming back to Washington to specialize in legislative and
regulatory reporting.  As an energy reporter and editor, I followed
one of the most comprehensive energy bills ever passed -- the
package of 1978 and covered the Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission (FERC).  I then spent 16 years covering
telecommunications for Communications Daily.  I started out
covering the Federal Communications Commission and state
regulation, and moved on to the Capitol Hill beat just in time for the
Telecom Act to start its way through the legislative process.  I later
became an editor at Congressional Quarterly,  supervising the
daily-side  telecom and tech coverage along with issues such as
aviation, transportation and others.  More journalism background is
here.

The whole PR background story is here.  The short version:
Along the way, I discovered a knack for the PR side of the business,
starting with community work, a brief Hill tour and then with the
National Telecommunications and Information Administration
(NTIA).  At the agency, I coordinated press strategy and events,
helped prepare officials for interviews, served as a press
spokesman and speechwriter and participated in policy
discussions.

In the corporate world, I was communications director for the
Washington, D.C. office of Qwest Communications, International,
working on legislative and federal regulatory issues.   I helped to
set press strategy for the office and company for important stories,
set up news events and interviews.

I'm now Communications Director for Public Knowledge, an
advocacy group dealing with intellectual property and copyright
issues.  We've had a lot of success getting press attention.  Check
this selection of clips from the PK Web site.  We've been seen in all
the best places, from the New York times to the Washington Post to
the Today show.

This is the
basic resume.
Looking To Get Away?  As promised, here are some favorite vacation spots:

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.   We prefer the Tennessee side.  Lots of great hikes with fabulous
waterfalls, nice restaurants, a little tourist tackiness thrown in.  The Arts and Crafts Loop near Gatlinburg is a great
diversion for a rest day.  You can stay in a motel, inn, or rent a house.  Here's the official park link:

The Canadian Rockies, including Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper.  We discovered this in 2003 and went back in 2004.
It's easy to get to, has lots of spectacular scenery and much to explore.  Here's the official park link for
Banff:    Here's
the link for
Jasper.
